Concentration Section
Through experimentation with subjects and settings, I discovered the abstract nature of the reflective properties of spoons, as well as how those reflections can convey variations in complexity in photographs.
When I started my concentration, I used one spoon with the same reflective perspective and varied what was reflected inside (images 1, 2, and 3). Then, I composed with more spoons in order to create repetition of form, while using a complementary color scheme to bring emphasis on the focal point of the piece (image 4). In image 5, I explored the reflections created in different types of spoons while still keeping the figure grounded through the use of shadows. For images 6 and 7, I went back to photographing multiple spoons to create linear qualities and directionality. Then, I experimented with radial composition, using the spoons to mimic and reflect the petals of the flower (image 8). For images 9 and 10, I investigated more of a diagonal and linear composition, using the lines and movement of the spoons to lead the eye to the focal point. On the next picture (image 11), I returned to the radial composition applied in image 8, but this time utilized a stronger, monochromatic color scheme, leading lines, and an equally reflective focal point to create a more powerful image. For my final picture (image 12), I planted the spoons within a bush to convey an abstract and surreal composition. The unusual perspective of the spoons’ reflections confuses the viewer and makes them question what is a spoon and what is nature.
